Dr. Mike McFarland

Dr. Michael B. McFarland is a counseling psychologist who is licensed in the state of Texas and practices in Dallas.  He earned his Ph.D. from the University of North Texas Counseling Psychology Doctoral Program, an American Psychological Association (APA)-accredited program.  He provides individual, couple, group, and family therapy services to pre-adolescents, adolescents, and adults.  In addition to providing scientifically supported (i.e., evidence-based) psychotherapy to address a broad range of emotional difficulties (e.g., depression, bereavement, relational challenges, adjustments to change or loss), he also specializes in the treatment of body image and eating disorders, identity issues, career counseling, anxiety disorders, and obsessive-compulsive spectrum disorders (OCD).  Dr. McFarland advanced his expertise in these areas through his predoctoral training experiences at the University of North Texas Psychology Clinic, the UNT Counseling and Testing Center, and Parkland Hospital’s Consult Liaison Psychiatry Service.  Moreover, he completed his Predoctoral Internship at Duke University’s Counseling and Testing Services.  After graduating from UNT, he completed a Postdoctoral Fellowship in the Inpatient Eating Disorder/Psychiatry Unit of Children’s Medical Center Dallas.  Finally, prior to completing his doctorate, he volunteered as a certified crisis counselor for over 1000 hours at the Suicide and Crisis Center of Dallas.

Currently, Dr. McFarland is engaged in community outreach activities in the Greater Dallas Fort Worth Metroplex, and can present to organizations on a wide range of topics including identification and treatment of eating disorders, male body image and eating disturbances, suicide prevention, and OCD / anxiety disorders in children and adolescents.

Prior to pursuing an advanced degree in counseling psychology, Dr. McFarland earned an undergraduate degree from Oklahoma State University in 1987, followed by an M.B.A. from Northwestern University’s J.L. Kellogg Graduate School of Management in 1991.  He then worked as a management consultant in the areas of strategy and operations, providing services to Fortune 500 Companies in the United States and Canada.
